The Speech Pathologist role will entail coverage in both outpatient and inpatient settings across Jackson outpatient and OMC outpatient and inpatient units, and:


  • Evaluates, plans and implements a goal oriented Speech Pathology treatment program that focuses on speech-language disorder, swallowing impairments/dysfunction and cognitive functioning to achieve an optimal level of independence
  • Provides an environment conducive to functional goal achievement
  • Utilizes interdisciplinary collaboration and available resources to provide care


A day in the life of a Speech Pathologist at Meridian includes:


  • Abiding by the rules and regulations of the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs – Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee Laws, and the policies and procedures of Meridian Health
  • Following the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Code of Ethics
  • Ensuring patient confidentiality according to HIPAA Law
  • Demonstrating competency/safety in the use of testing techniques, therapeutic interventions for the following:
    • o   Oral/Motor
    • o   Dysphagia
    • o   Respiratory Compromise – tracheostomy/ventilator
    • o   Modified Barium Swallow – FEES
    • o   Aphasia
    • o   Cognitive/Linguistic Disorders
    • o   Non-vocal communication
    • o   Head/neck cancer – alaryngeal speech
    • o   Dysphonia/voice disorders
    • o   Apraxia
  • Demonstrating Age Specific knowledge for assessment/treatment of patients within age groups related to the practice setting
  • Evaluating patients with various disabilities
  • Identifying problem areas
  • Setting appropriate short-term and long-term goals
  • Establishing patient specific goal oriented Plan of Care with time frames
  • Following “Referrals for Meridian Rehabilitation Clinical Services” policy as appropriate
  • Consistently communicating with patient’s referring health care professional re the patient’s Plan of Care
  •  Following “ Referrals for other Ancillary Services & Programs” as appropriate
  • Communicating with interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary teams re the patient’s Plan of Care as appropriate
  • Establishing a collaborative rapport with patient/family to promote patient participation with the Plan of Care
  • Including patient/family when developing the patient’s Plan of Care
  • Discussing with patient/family the patient’s status toward goal achievement and changes with the Plan of Care
  • Providing patient/family education according to the Plan of Care – including disease process, testing methods, home exercise program, use of augmentative and alternative communication devices and/or communication aids
  • Following established Plan of Care for patient treatments
  • Working collaboratively with other speech pathologists in modifying Plan of Care when needed
  • Consistently communicating with health care team re patients’ Plan of Care including: status, treatment modifications, goal progression and discharge planning
  • Re-evaluating patients in a timely manner
  • Objectively noting changes in patient status
  • Establishing new or update patient specific short-term and long-term goals appropriately
  • Modifying Plan of Care – adjusting the type of treatment as needed
  • Discharging patients in a timely manner
  • Demonstrating knowledge of reasonable & necessary services
  • Following “Criteria for Discontinuing Meridian Rehabilitation Clinical Services” policy as appropriate
  • Establishing a Medical Record for each patient evaluated – legibly documenting specifics in a clear, concise and timely manner.
  • Performing Initial Evaluations
  • Documenting progress notes/reports
  • Performing re-evaluations
  • Documenting discharge summaries
  • Preparing reports based on the medical record for patient’s referring health care professional.
  • Preparing reports based on the medical record for patient’s insurance related needs.
  • Completing charge sheets legibly in a timely manner to ensure proper billing of services rendered
  • Promoting Team approach to the functioning of the department by readily assisting other team members when needed
  • Participating with teams working on Performance Improvement initiatives – including: policies, procedures, new programs
  • Attending interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary meetings/in-services as assigned
  • Presenting in-services within the department, to other team members or the community as needed
  • Assisting in the orientation/training of new team members with the department
  • Providing supervision to Speech Pathology Interns
  • Providing supervision of and delegation of tasks to Rehabilitation Aides
  • Providing mentor-ship/supervision of students and/or volunteers
  • Notifying appropriate team member of supply and equipment needs
  • Performing other duties as requested by supervisor
  • Promoting a safe environment for patients/families and team members
  • Demonstrating thorough understanding of Meridian fire, safety and disaster procedures
  • Demonstrating thorough understanding of Meridian Infection Control procedures
  • Completing annual requirements as assigned by Meridian – including: ABT, PPD, Fit Testing


  • Current New Jersey License to practice Speech Language Pathology
  • Current CPR Certification
  • A minimum of one (1) year of professional experience working with adult and pediatric speech language pathology is required
  • Flexible to work varied days/hours in multiple locations both outpatient and inpatient
